It has been my experience, after playing in restaurants and bars over many years, that clientele go there to #1: Eat, #2: Converse, #3: Tune in and out of what a musician is offering. This has led me to play instrumentals exclusively, in order to not add to, or compete with, the vocal chatter in the room.
Audiences do enjoy hearing songs that they are familiar with, so I weave in cover songs along with my originals at every performance. PN
